What is BGAN? Inmarsat’s BGAN (Broadband Global Area Network) is a global satellite communications service that provides simultaneous broadband data and telephony services. BGAN is the only mobile satellite communications service that offers a variety of voice and data services in a small, portable device. The BGAN service was launched in the Americas over a year ago, and the service is being used for a variety of broadcast applications. Broadcasters all over the world are using BGAN for remote audio broadcasts, remote video broadcasts, and for voice and data communications. BGAN’s portable terminals allow broadcasters to do remote broadcasts from practically any location, even when there are no communications or power services available. BGAN also allows broadcasters to do remote broadcasts in the busiest cities at a moments notice. BGAN provides reliable voice, broadband data and messaging services to maintain communications at all times. BGAN terminals simultaneously provide traditional telephony services like POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), and broadband data services for standard internet connections and streaming channels with guaranteed data rates. It’s like carrying your own telephony and data networks in your computer bag! Since BGAN provides such a wide variety of services, broadcasters have their choice of services to use for a remote broadcast, while they maintain simultaneous communication. In some cases, some of the BGAN services may be used in a backup or hot standby capacity. As the digital revolution continues, BGAN’s IP (Internet Protocol) services can be used with existing remote broadcast equipment, and new IP-based equipment. BGAN terminals may be purchased or rented, and there is a terminal for every broadcasting budget.
