The addition of the Charleston depot to the Mackay Marine business holds many benefits for the company. Charleston is the fourth largest container port in the United States, and fills in the Mackay Marine customer service "gap" that previously existed between the Jacksonville, Florida, and Norfolk, Virginia, depot locations.
Other advantages of the Charleston location are the high traffic in the area, with 2000 vessels calling on the port every year, and the proximity of Spawar, one of the U.S. Navy’s key contacts. The Mackay location in the shipyard itself will allow for prime access to the major activities within the port.
