Marine Service Technician – Namibia

Mackay is currently seeking an experienced Marine Service Technician, who is proficient in English and possesses the skills and qualifications below for our location in Walvis Bay, NamibiaThis position is open to Namibian citizens only.

Marine Service Technician Job Summary:

Under limited supervision, the Marine Service Technician (MST) installs, services, and repairs electronic navigation and communication equipment on board commercial ships as well as offshore installations. MSTs test, adjust, and troubleshoot electronic components, PCBs, sub-assemblies, and antennas as well as load, update, and modify software. Marine Service Technicians use their knowledge of radio frequencies (RF), electronic theory and circuitry to address a variety of technical problems and make intelligent use of complex schematics, blueprints, and manuals to accurately achieve assignments and upon completion, compose a detailed service report.

  • Sounders

 Experience Required:

  • Knowledgeable on the workings of Marine Navigation and Communication equipment.
  • Fully knowledgeable on GMDSS regulations and equipment carriage requirements.
  • Carry out GMDSS Radio surveys and per IMO, ITU, and flag state regulations.
  • Knowledgeable and competent to use test equipment required for surveys and service of mentioned equipment.
  • Repair, service, installation, integration, and commissioning of navigation and communication equipment including GMDSS equipment.
  • VDR & S-VDR Annual Performance Test, installation, and repairs.
  • Working with hand and electrical tools required for the installation of equipment.
  • LAN and ITC experience – setting up LAN network and termination.
  • Understanding basic computer programming.
  • Competence in use of MS Office

Marine Service Technician Qualifications:

  • A University degree, B-Tech degree, or equivalent technical certifications.
  • 3+ Years as a Marine Service Technician (MST), Marine Electronics Technician, or Marine Service Engineer (MSE) in the commercial shipping industry.
  • Must be proficient in speaking, reading, and writing in English.
  • Strong knowledge of electronics theory and application.
  • GMDSS Generale Radio Operator Maintainer License is an advantage.
  • Factory trained in communication and navigation equipment.
  • Certified training on marine safety onboard seagoing vessels/offshore installations.
  • Physically Fit.  Work environment often involves carrying 9-14 kg., climbing ladders/masts, working at height and void spaces, and exposure to weather.
  • Medical Fit Certified
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and weekends as required.
  • Must be willing to work offshore and abroad as required.
