Magnetic Compass

A Marine Magnetic Compass located on a ship is a vital and independent navigation tool that utilizes a magnetized needle aligned with the magnetic field of the Earth, and directs towards Magnetic North. This compass is housed in a protective binnacle to keep it leveled, and helps to counteract interference with the ship’s own magnetism. SOLAS requires Magnetic Compasses onboard all vessels as an emergency backup for electronic navagation systems like GPS.
